Cataract

Cataracts result from the opacification of the natural crystalline lens, which is a very powerful lens located inside the eye. This loss of transparency impedes the light from reaching the retina in a normal way, leading to progressive foggy vision. cataracts, opacification crystalline lens, reaching retina

Eye affected by cataract
Cataracts usually arise as consequences of the eye’s aging process but may develop also at a young age, spontaneously or because of various local or general conditions, the most common among which is diabetes.

The prolonged use of pharmaceuticals such as cortisone, either applied locally or taken in through other means, may also be among the causes of the opacification of the crystalline lens. Cataracts are rarely congenital, that is, present from the moment of birth. Diagnosis may be effected only by a specialized ophthalmologist/optician through a complete eye examination.
causes develop cataracts
When cataracts are present the luminous rays that enter the eye are not able pass through the opaque crystalline lens, and are instead deviated in all directions. As such, the images cannot fall on the retina, and generate a foggy sensation.
cataracts, opaque crystalline lens
Cataracts cause a progressive blurring of vision, making it difficult to see in dark environments, and carry out normal daily activities such as driving, distinguishing the number of the bus, and recognizing people and things even at a near distance. The colors appear faded whereas in intense light flashes may be seen.
cataracts, blurring of vision
During the initial phase of a cataract, a variation of corrective lenses may improve vision.
Should the cataract grow, stronger glasses will not be of help and may be badly tolerated. In fact, in common cases the person sees better without glasses, at least for near vision.

Cataracts Symptoms

Cataracts vary, and depending on the evolution and seat of opacification present symptoms such as:
- blurred vision with dark stains that move with the movements of the eye;
- monocular diplopia, which is the perception of two or more images by a single eye; this characteristic phenomenon of the first stages of cataracts is due to an irregular refraction of the crystalline lens and is often accompanied by the sensation of distorted images.
- seeing colored hazes around the source of light caused by the alternating of refraction zones of diverse dioptric power;
- the changing of the dioptric power caused by the opacification of the crystalline lens;
- alteration of vision color (sensation of seeing a ”yellowness”);
- drop in visual acuity.
