What are the advantages of the new Laser technique TLCT for the correction of astigmatism?
The advantages of TLCT (Two Laser Combined Technique) are connected to the total correction of astigmatism with the result of improving visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, color perception, and the quality of night and day vision.
What can Lasik surgery obtain for the correction of myopia?
Lasik boasts of many and important advantages; Lasik surgery for the correction of myopia achieves excellent refractive results; rapid healing, no pain or annoying post-surgical effects, absence of corneal opacity, visual stability and reduction of the probability of diminished vision with time.
Is it possible to perform Lasik surgery also for severe myopia?
Lasik surgery corrects all degrees of myopia up to +/- 8 diopters. The choice of a particular laser surgical method was established in relation to the thickness of the cornea specific to every patient’s conditions.
Is there need of bandaging one’s eyes after a Lasik surgery?
After Lasik surgery the patient is ready to resume normal activities, but has to pay particular attention to the post-surgical therapy which consists of instilling artificial tears in the eye for three consecutive days. The patient that has undergone Lasik surgery may resume normal activities immediately but must avoid swimming for a month, not use cosmetics, and avoid practicing traumatic sports and contact with liquids, vapors and soaps for at least 15 days.
What are the advantages of surgery with the PRK technique?
This technique uses the laser as in the LASIK technique but the difference lies in that visual recovery is slower though less stressful for the patient. The PRK technique treats myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism when the condition of the thickness of the cornea does not allow the use of Lasik.
What does an athlete who wishes to undergo laser surgery need to do?
The patient who practices sports, especially at the professional level, needs greater attention because visual acuity is fundamental for excellent performance in sports. The ophthalmologist must verify if there are no alterations in the anatomical structure, especially in view of probable accidents during competitions. The innovative TLCT (Two Laser Combined Technique) technique is particularly indicated for sports professionals since it corrects visual defects perfectly, obtaining not only the standards of 10/10 but in some cases up to 20/10.
Is laser refractive surgery safe?
This type of surgery has reached a high safety level and Dr. Appiotti has been using this technique since 1988 with a great number of patients who are satisfied with the operation they underwent. We must however underline the importance of turning to expert professionals who are able to evaluate the pre-surgical ocular conditions of the patient, to assess both the suitability for surgery and also for the best technique to adopt. Not all eyes are the same and no surgery is applicable to all. Another fundamental aspect to bear in mind is that the equipment must be absolutely updated, reliable and handled with strict maintenance standards.
Is it possible to turn to laser surgery also for cataracts?
Laser surgery intervenes not only in the correction of myopia and other visual defects, but also for cataracts where the crystalline lens afflicted by cataract is removed. The instrument used is called the Phacolaser. The Phacolaser probe which is introduced through a small incision, melts, emulsifies and sucks the crystalline lens affected by cataract. Immediately after, an artificial lens is introduced through the same incision; first it is folded into two, and once in the right position returns to its normal form. The operation is performed in the ambulatory, does not require hospitalization and is less traumatic than phacoemulsification through ultrasounds.
Laser surgery is indicated for cataracts in their initial phases.
Is laser surgery possible for glaucoma?
There are various laser surgical techniques for glaucoma: the Yag Iridotomy selective Laser, and the Trabeculoplasty selective laser (SLT). Each technique targets specific conditions. At times laser surgery in cases of glaucoma is only temporary even though surgery can be postponed for quite some time. In other cases, laser surgery makes ulterior surgery unnecessary or may allow the reduction of pharmacologic therapies.
Can strong myopia be totally corrected?
Yes, thanks to the innovative TLCT (Two Laser Combined Technique) it is possible to correct natural astigmatism, post-surgical traumas (cataracts, corneal transplants) with great success. Surgery can create a final aspheric corneal surface which allows perfect focusing of images on the retina.
How do you gauge if a patient is suitable for laser surgery?
The evaluation of suitability for excimer laser surgery includes, during a pre-surgical examination, a number of non-invasive tests (topography, pachymetry, pupillometry, contrast sensitivity, endothelial microscopy, ecobiometry, corneal tomography) besides an in-depth study of the eye’s anatomical conditions. The tests however are not sufficient to establish suitability to surgery, and only the doctor’s experience and the quality of the lasers used, may determine the strategy and the best results.
