Glaucoma
The eye behaves like a semi-elastic ball filled with liquid which circulates continuously. If the quantity of the liquid produced does not equal the quantity absorbed, an accumulation results. As when a ball is too bloated, it provokes an increase of internal pressure. The internal pressure of the eye or intraocular pressure does not therefore correspond to the tension in the eyeball. The liquid that flows within the eye and is responsible for intraocular pressure, is called “aqueous humor.”

Aqueous humor is produced by the iris and flows forward towards the pupil. The discharge channels of the aqueous humor are located at the internal angle that is formed between the cornea and the anterior face of the iris. The discharge channels pass through ramifications going through the wall of the eyeball where the liquids are absorbed. The aqueous humor in fact, has nothing to do with tear formation as erroneously believed.

Glaucoma is an illness of the optic nerve. This is usually damaged by elevated intraocular pressure. The optic nerve resembles a transmission cable that connects the retina to the brain and is constituted by a layer of wires called “nerve fibers”, which number over a million for each eye. The connecting point of this cable with the posterior part of the eye is called “papilla".

The papilla’s health depends on the blood circulation of the nutritive substances which is slowed down when the ocular pressure is too high. Each fiber of the optic nerve transports a part of the visual message to the retina at the brain. The “visual field” is the part of the surrounding environment in which we perceive images without needing to shift the direction of our gaze.

Because of glaucoma the optic nerves are slowly damaged, internal zones of the visual field generate the so called “scotomas” or blind spots making it impossible to see. Initially very small, scotomas are noted only when they spread out and the optic nerve has already been seriously damaged. In the meantime the patient continues to see clearly in the center. In the terminal phases the optic nerve is completely destroyed and blindness results. Because of this, the timely discovery of glaucoma is essential.
