 Keratoconus
Keratoconus is an illness consisting in the alteration of the cornea, the surface of which does not maintain its spherical form but tends to collapse at the center or at its lower part.
From the clinical viewpoint, keratoconus is defined in three stages:
- Stage I: Initial phase (also called streaking); keratoconus may be confused with common astigmatism which usually does not change during an individual’s life. The keratoconus condition usually tends to intensify, causing the initial astigmatism to increase.
- Stage II: An irregular form of astigmatism appears, and can partially be corrected by eyeglasses. In these cases the patient may reach fairly good vision.
- Stage III: Corneal deformation is very marked, due to a thinning out of that portion of the cornea which may droop. Corneal transparency is often altered, vision is highly compromised. In these conditions even eyeglasses are of little help. |

| Keratoconus is not caused by this factor alone, and most probably, more factors contribute to this type of pathology. There is surely a hereditary component but the responsible genes or group of genes together, still have to be discovered before they can be pointed out as the cause of this illness. |
