 Lasek (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis)
The Lasek (Sub-Epithelial Photokerectomy) is a refractive surgery technique in which a very delicate technical maneuver to raise the outer corneal layer is associated with the laser wherein the epithelium is repositioned on the cornea after treatment.

The Lasek technique can be considered as an evolution of the PRK, improving it by integrating it with the Lasik principles. In fact, the Lasek maintains the outer skin of the cornea (epithelium) which is not eliminated, but simply detached from the underlying layer in such a way as to be able to put it back after the laser treatment.
Surgery with the Lasek technique is performed with topical anesthesia (anesthetic eye drops).

Lasek intervention procedure:
- placement of a speculum to hold the eye open,
- the patient is made to lie under the laser’s microscope where the corneal surface layer (manual or automated) is detached and flipped back on the upper or lateral part of the cornea;
- the patient is made to fix his gaze on a red light while a computerized eye-tracker controls the eye’s alignment during the treatment;
- the surgeon presses the laser pedal;
- the thin outer layer is then replaced with the help of a special box and a micro sponge;
- at the end of the procedure the eye is medicated with antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops and a special thin therapeutic soft contact lens is applied (aimed at helping the growth of the “skin” covering the cornea or epithelia, and to ease the pain; it is removed by the doctor after 4-5 days) and the procedure is completed.

The total healing of the corneal tissues, together with the resulting stabilization of vision is always slow and is completed only after 6 months. During this time the eye must be kept under control in order to guide the healing curve with eye drops, as needed.

| The phenomenon of correction regression caused by excessive scarring (so called Haze) of the corneal tissues in Lasek treatments, is minor with respect to PRK but greater as compared to Lasik. The Lasek treatment may thus be considered a variable of the PRK and not of the Lasik for the correction of average and severe nearsightedness and astigmatism, as long as the thickness conditions and curve of the cornea do not pose any limitations. |
