Sport and visual defects

For those who practice sports on the amateur level and especially on the professional level, perfect vision is fundamental to allow the full exploitation of physical and athletic potentials. For sports professionals perfect vision is fundamental in acquiring excellence in the chosen discipline.

Many athletes with visual defects practice sports without visual corrections or use glasses and contact lenses, the latter being preferred obviously for safety and visual acuity. Often however, the environmental conditions of the sports grounds, the excessive use of contact lenses and the implied risks of infections from their use, result in intolerance to lenses by many. Moreover clinical practice has often revealed imperfect vision correction, despite the use of contact lenses.

Imperfect correction tends to create types of behavior that do not respond to the stimuli in a standardized manner, according to the principle of the best results obtained with the least effort, resulting in the tendency to assume an incorrect posture which in reality is an attempt to compensate for the deficit of the visual system.

For example, if one of the muscles guiding the movement of the eye, is not working well, binocular vision will be difficult and this defect is consequentially compensated for by a rotation of the head with negative repercussions on the back’s alignment with the knees. The same type of problem is seen in astigmatic patients who tend to incline their heads to find a better focus, when their visual defect is not perfectly corrected with contact lenses. This produces incorrect body posture, penalizing sports performances, and this is why many sports professionals choose to undergo refractive surgery.

Dr. Appiotti studied the refractive defects in those who practice sports and addressed them in a specific way by creating a new technique particularly suitable for sports professionals affected by astigmatism.

This surgical technique called Two Laser Combined Technique corrects all types of astigmatism, moderate, severe, simple or compound or associated with myopia or hyperopia.
Dr. Appiotti has been using this innovative technique since 2001, in collaboration with the specialists of the Surgical Polyambulatory of Modena, a specialized center equipped with the latest diagnostic instruments and state-of-the-art instruments which perform high precision and effective surgery.

The TLCT technique achieves excellent results in quantitative and qualitative terms, thanks to the simultaneous use of two excimer lasers.
The effectiveness of this technique is seen not only in the quantity of recovered vision, but especially in the quality of recovered vision obtained.

The results obtained with the TLCT are a visual acuity of over 10/10 in some cases reaching even 20/10, an optimal quality of vision, certainly better than that obtained with eyeglasses and contact lenses. The patients who underwent TLCT testify that they perceive details and colors better, and greater contrast sensitivity.

All the athletes operated on with the TLCT obtained a minimum natural visual acuity of 10/10 and an improvement of the lateral visual field and equilibrium. A more detailed peripheral perception is an important achievement especially for athletes since it helps to acquire correct posture. The total elimination of visual defects contributes to greater precision and optimization of specific techniques and gestures, but to obtain optimal performance levels, the subcortical systems controlling movements need to function properly.

This very complex system called proprioception, does not depend on the control of consciousness but on the coordinated intervention of the mechanisms of the visual and vestibular receptors. The proprioceptive system handles the control of posture and equilibrium, and besides relaying information is also a system that manages response. Therefore the training of this system of movement control is of fundamental importance for all sports practitioners, in correcting wrong athletic gestures, preventing accidents, making movements more precise and reflexes more rapid, improving sensitivity towards gestures and increasing the capacity for equilibrium.

Dr. Appiotti studied some sports specialties to evidence the particular traits connected to visual effort. Further information can be read in the following sections:
Golf
To play golf one must have an optimal visual perception since it would be problematic to make erroneous judgments on distances which would strongly jeopardize a golfer’s performance.
Soccer
Each soccer player that underwent surgery with the TLCT technique reported an improvement in immediate focusing of quick glances, peripheral vision and dynamic visual acuity.
Rugby
Quick glance focusing, peripheral vision and dynamic visual acuity are fundamental elements for a rugby player.
Skiing
Skiing is a greatly dynamic discipline where quick glance focusing, peripheral vision and coordination of eye-hand and eye-foot enter into play at an elevated speed.
Tennis
Tennis professionals who underwent surgery with the TLCT technique improved the speed of perception and rapidity of response.
Volleyball
The visual acuity of a volleyball player is fundamental for the speed of the execution of movements, body stability and the capacity to coordinate eyes and hands.
Basketball
The capacity to evaluate the path of a ball, and use lateral vision, hand-eye coordination, are the fundamental aspects for a basketball professional. |
